Gag reel: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ dance competition
Guardians of the Galaxy Blu-ray edition will be out December 6, but BuzzFeed has an exclusive outtake from the movie. We probably all agree that one of the funniest scenes in film was when Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) distracts villain Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) from destroying an entire planet by singing from and dancing to The Five Stairsteps’ “O-o-h Child.” What we didn’t know when watching is that while trying to film that, the cast pulled off a dance competition of their own.
James Gunn, the director of the film, commented on his official facebook page: “To be clear, this wasn’t improv that was meant to be part of the film – it was actually a joke on Dave Bautista (Batista), where I got Chris, Lee Pace, and Zoe together and decided to turn the tables on the script. Dave was as surprised as the crowd when Ronan suddenly took up Quill on his offer of a dance off. When Dave is dancing he’s just being a good sport. In the outtakes, you can see the whole crowd all dancing along. It was one of my favorite moments on set.”
Pratt didn’t work with a choreographer on the scene, nor did the script really specify how exactly he was supposed to be dancing. “But I did have a pretty good sense of the era from which I would be drawing dance moves, given that Quill draws all of his pop-culture references from a certain time frame of basically 1985 and earlier,” he told BuzzFeed.
